The 17th International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering will be held in Alexandria from 5-9 October, 2009. Although they may not sound like subjects that have much to do with Egyptology, soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering are actually vital elements of site management and conservation, and I am looking forward to taking part in this important event.
On April 15th, 2009, Mr. Noppidan Theppitak, the Thai ambassador to Egypt, informed Zahi Hawass that Bansomdejchaopraya Rajabhat University in Bangkok is planning to present him with an honorary doctorate on June 16th, 2009, in a gala ceremony in the Golden Room of the beautifully restored Manyal Palace.
I am very sorry to announce that due to unforeseen circumstances - an unexpected obligation that I must carry out in my capacity as Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities - I will not be able to be in Atlanta on March 19th as I had planned. Fortunately, though, we have been able to reschedule my lecture for 7:30 PM on March 26, at the historic Fox Theater!
