A group of us gathered last weekend at Naguib Mahfouz Cafe in the Khan El-Khalili to celebrate the appointment of our friend Hamdy Rizk as editor-in-chief of Al-Musawwar magazine. This close-knit circle of friends includes (right to left): Karem Gabr, editor-in-chief of Rosa Al-Yousef magazine and newspaper; Mohamed Shafik, chairman of Misr Travel; famous Egyptian writer Anis Mansour; Hamdy Rizk; Egypt's Minister of Investment Dr. Mohamed Mohie El-Din; and Amal Osman, editor-in-chief of Akhbar El-Nagoum ("News of the Stars") magazine.

We have a very special relationship, and see each other regularly. This was the first time that our gathering included Anis Mansour, and we enjoyed hearing the fascinating stories that he told about President Anwar Sadat and the Arab-Israeli peace process. Anis was an advisor to Sadat, and had a close relationship with him. At the end of the party, we cut a cake decorated with a picture of Hamdy and a single candle.
