Mentuhotep II

 This funerary statue depicts the king Mentuhotep II in the form of Osiris, wrapped in a tight white cloak with his arms folded across his chest. He is wearing the red crown of Lower Egypt where Thebes, his capital, was located. Mentuhotep II was the first pharaoh of the 11th Dynasty and was responsible for reuniting Egypt after the First Intermediate Period. His mortuary temple, where this statue was found by Howard Carter, is located next to the temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahri. (Photo: Kenneth Garrett)
