What is important to me is that I have the great good fortune to spend my days doing something I love, and being given the opportunity to make a difference in the world.

— Zahi Hawass

Inspector of Antiquities for Tuna el-Gebel and Mallawi
Date:
January 1, 1969 (All day) - December 31, 1969 (All day)

Hawass' first assignment as an inspector for the Egyptian Antiquities Organization (later known as the Supreme Council of Antiquities) was at Tuna el-Gebel in Middle Egypt. The site, known in Greco-Roman times as Hermopolis, is in the desert, about 6 kilometers from the nearest village. Hawass was reluctant at first to accept this assignment, and briefly considered changing careers rather than accepting it.
