The Mena House Oberoi Hotel by the pyramids of Giza has a very special place in my heart. Since 1974, when I was appointed an inspector for the pyramids, I have spent many happy hours at this elegant and historic place. When I was young I used to have lunch by the pool, and gaze at the pyramids. I still love to go there to eat at the Indian restaurant, one of my favorite restaurants in Egypt. I have met many famous people at Mena House, and I am also happy to say that I have made many friends there.
When I worked at Giza, I used to go every day to my office near the hotel. I still keep this office to oversee my work at the pyramids, and I have been friends with all of the Mena House managers who have come and gone over the years. In fact, in 1992, when I had my heart attack, the manager at that time, Satish Kumar, called me and said that he knew that I needed rest and quiet. He invited me to stay at Mena House for an entire week, and kept it a secret that I was there. It was the best week of my life - I did not see anyone, or even answer the phone. The hotel prepared the food my doctors wanted me to have, and I spent my time recovering. That week really saved my life, and I will always be grateful to my friend Satish. These days, I go to Mena House often to enjoy dinner at the Indian restaurant there. I love Indian food, and I think that the Mughal Room is one of the best restaurants in Cairo. The chef knows me, and always prepares my favorite dishes.
Mr. Sanjiv Malhotra recently left as General Manager of the hotel, and I am very sorry to see him go. He is a delightful person, and has a true gift for hospitality. Because Mena House is so special to me, I am always happy when they welcome a wonderful new member to their team. I recently met Mr. Mohit Nerula, the new General Manager, and I am delighted to say that he has already become a friend of mine! His 14 year old daughter Srishti is in love with ancient Egypt, and I gave her a copy of my book for young people about Tutankhamun. Mr. Nerula came to visit me in my office today, and presented me with a wonderful gift - some Indian pickles! I am looking forward to many more years of friendship with him and his family, and I know that the beautiful Mena House hotel will continue to be an important part of my life.
