Race for the Cure in Egypt
In October, the Susan G. Komen Foundation held a Race for the Cure at Giza around the pyramids.
The Susan G. Komen Foundation was started in 1982 by Nancy G. Brinker, and is dedicated to raising awareness and funding research for breast cancer. They hold Race for the Cure events all over the world to raise money and awareness, and this was the first to be held in the Middle East. I was glad to be able to help when they wanted to have one at the pyramids, during breast cancer awareness month in Egypt. I gave permission for the event to be held at Giza and for them to light the pyramids pink. The event was organized by Nancy G. Brinker, and the First Lady of Egypt, Suzanne Mubarak, who is dedicated to helping women. The night before the race, we had a reception in the garden at Mena House Hotel, and Nancy Brinker gave a nice speech, and I gave a speech saying this is an important event and holding it at the pyramids will bring international attention to this cause. During the reception, they lighted the pyramids pink, which was very interesting
To thank me for my assistance, they gave me a pink cowboy hat, as they know I love hats.
The day of the race, more than 6000 people came to Giza to participate in the 5 km walk that looped around the pyramids and the Sphinx. Many groups wore pink to show their support.
