People often ask me, ‘well, it’s not really as exciting as Indiana Jones, now is it?’
I reply, ‘to an archaeologist, yes, it certainly is!’

Press Tour to New York City

I’ve just returned from New York where I was on a publicity tour for Chasing Mummies, my new show on the History Channel. My first interview was for the Today Show with Matt Lauer. It was very nice to see him and Ann Curry, who has been a friend of mine since she came to visit Cairo a few years ago.

I did many other television interviews including Inside Edition, FOX and ABC news. My second day was consumed by a national radio media tour and several satellite interviews in twenty five cities across the US. Although these days were very long and tiring, I really enjoyed talking with so many people about the most recent discoveries in Egypt and about Chasing Mummies, which brings these discoveries into the homes of people across America.

I realize that some people will like this show and some people may not like this show. I really tried to do my best to make a show that would educate people about the wonders of Egypt and I hope that my message will be heard. Many people asked me about why I yelled at people so much while we were out on sites. I can assure you that anyone who knows me realizes that I have a very passionate and boisterous personality. While I am out on a site I always have the safety of my team and the monuments foremost in my mind. If anything compromises those two things I get very upset and this comes across in Chasing Mummies. I love Egypt and its heritage so much that when I am out on excavations I become very excited and totally engrossed in the discovery. I hope that Chasing Mummies helps convey this passion and that people will understand how dedicated I am to Egyptian archaeology.

I did have some free time while I was in New York and I was able to visit the American Museum of Natural History. I would like to thank all of the kind people that I met while I was in the museum, especially Sarah Barack who invited me to come and see the exhibit: “Traveling the Silk Road- Ancient Pathway to the Modern World.” It was my first time visiting the AMNH and I was amazed by how beautifully the museum was designed. I was particularly impressed by the way that they exhibited the artifacts. I hope that the SCA can learn from these ideas because we are building a civilization museum now in Old Cairo and I would love for it to look as beautiful as the AMNH. I very much enjoyed seeing the exhibit about the Silk Road and I encourage everyone to get see it if they had the chance. I also went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art to meet all the staff in the Egyptian Department.

The History Channel was kind enough to organize several nice events for me in the evenings. One night I had a dinner held in my honor and the next evening I went to see the Broadway musical, “Memphis.” I really enjoyed the show very much. The lead actor and actresses are extremely talented as is the rest of the cast. I was very impressed with the quality of the production from the songs, to the direction and the set. The theater where “Memphis” is playing is also in front of the Discovery Hall where the King Tut exhibit is being presented. I could see the crowd of people going to the King Tut exhibit while I was waiting to enter the theater and it made me very glad.

I had a wonderful time in New York and I hope to return soon!
