Minister of Culture, Farouk Hosny and Dr. Zahi Hawass, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA) organized a press conference on Wednesday, December 8th at Al-Amir Taz Palace to announce the opening of the Coptic Art Revealed exhibition. The exhibit displays over 200 artifacts from the Coptic era and was organized to celebrate the centennial of the Coptic Art Museum, which was renovated and reopened in 2006.
Coptic Art Revealed is the first locally curated exhibition on Coptic art. The show focuses on the splendors of the Coptic era and highlight the Copts’ outstanding contribution to Egypt’s diverse and rich heritage. The exhibition presents more than 200 priceless artefacts selected from several museum collections in Egypt and shown together for the first time. This includes rediscovered treasures from the storage facilities of the Coptic Museum and invaluable artefacts from its permanent display; objects from the National Museum, Greco-Roman Museum and the Museum of the New Library in Alexandria; the Beni Suef and El Arish Museums; the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Fustat and the Museum of Islamic Art.Visitors will have the opportunity to see colourful icons painted by renowned icon-painters; stone and wooden friezes with intriguing designs recovered from ancient monasteries and churches; illuminated manuscripts from the archives of the Coptic Museum, among them an excerpt from the famous Nag Hammadi Library; ancient letters which open a window to social and monastic life during the Coptic era; precious metal and pottery ware; beautiful textiles and other splendid objects of daily life. The artefacts are arranged either chronologically or thematically and introduce visitors to the most significant features of the Coptic culture.
The Supreme Council of Antiquities is promoting this unique exhibition to be shown in other cities in Egypt and to be sent abroad to illuminate Egypt in Late Antiquity.
