What is important to me is that I have the great good fortune to spend my days doing something I love, and being given the opportunity to make a difference in the world.

Improvements for SCA employees

For the first time in the history of the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA) a medical insurance plan has been established for its employees.

I was very proud to announce that the plan will be put into effect in January 2011. This insurance coverage, provided by Life Health Care, will ensure excellent medical care for the 32,000 SCA employees at well known medical centers and hospitals in Egypt. In the past the SCA employees had insurance coverage that they never used, because they were not able to afford to see the best doctors or visit the best hospitals. Instead, all the employees would donate money to anyone who was sick or needed to have an operation. Now thanks to this new medical plan, all the SCA employees will have access to the best medical care, and a prescription drug plan. Major General Sameh Khatab, head of the financial department at the SCA, has developed a payment plan so that 5% will be deducted from the monthly salary of each employee as a fee for the medical care, and the SCA will cover the remainder of the cost from grants and other funds.

The new medical coverage is part of a plan to develop an entire social insurance package for all SCA employees and their families. I have always been very intent on improving the lives of the SCA staff and over the past few years many improvements have been made to their lives, including an increase in salary, new office facilities, and educational training opportunities. I have worked especially hard to make sure that the SCA archaeologists have been given excellent fieldwork training, and that they are allowed to travel the world to learn about excavation techniques and museology in other countries. I am confident that after I leave the SCA, I will have hundreds of well-trained, young Egyptians to take over where I left off and continue to make the SCA a world class antiquities organization.
