Dr. Hawass receives honorary doctorate from the New University of Lisbon in Portugal

Last Tuesday, Dr. Zahi Hawass, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA) received an honorary doctorate from the New University of Lisbon in Portugal (Universidade Nova de Lisboa). The ceremony was held at the University’s main campus and was attended by the University’s President and professors, Egypt’s ambassador to Portugal HE Hamdi Loza, and several other ambassadors to Portugal including those from Algeria, Palestine and Iraq.

Dr. Paulo Marchiori Buss, President of the World Federation of Public Health Associations and Director of The Sergio Arouca National School of Public Health (Escola Nacional de Saude Publica Sergio Arouca; ENSP) of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (FIOCRUZ) in Brazil also received an honorary doctorate.

During the ceremony, the President of the University delivered a speech highlighting Dr. Hawass’ accomplishments in the field of Egyptology and archaeology. After receiving his degree, Dr. Hawass addressed the assembly and discussed the steps that led to his success, as well as his ongoing efforts in Egypt.
 
Hawass is the first person from an Arab nation and the second African to receive an honorary doctorate from the New University of Lisbon, which is listed as one of the top 400 universities in the world. The first African to receive the honorary doctorate was Mr. Kofi Annan, former Secretary General of the United Nation. The day after the ceremony, Dr. Hawass delivered a lecture about his use of groundbreaking genetic technology to reveal the secrets of the royal mummies in Egypt.
 
This is the fifth honorary doctorate that Dr. Hawass has received, his previous doctorates were awarded by: University of Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria (2010), Universidad Católica Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic (2009), Thailand’s Bansomdejchaopraya Rajabhat University (2009), American University in Cairo (2005).
