Damietta is my hometown. I grew up in a small village about 10km south of the town of Damietta. This town is beautiful, very clean and near to a very famous seashore where all the Egyptian movie stars and singers used to visit on their vacations.
Thirty years ago, the Ministry of Construction decided to build a new city called New Damietta. It is built next door to the port of Damietta in the northern Delta. The city is surrounded by many beautiful green areas and currently has 125,000 inhabitants. The city is built on 29,535 acres with 6,500 houses. It is divided into five sections and has many facilities such as a university, a large park and a beach area. To the south of the city is an industrial park around the port. New Damietta also has state of the art hospitals, educational facilities, and both a mosque and a church for religious worship.
I went to the opening ceremony and attended a very nice lunch that was held in my honor. All the council heads of the twenty-three new cities were in attendance and it was very nice to see everyone. I gave a speech to open the sports competition and there was a beautiful fireworks and light display. It was a very nice event and I wish the best of luck to all the athletes competing in the nine sporting events.
